Blogs, a short for web log have become very popular to all kinds of people all around the world with different ideas of information to share with others. They create in some cases an anonymous site in which to contribute and communicate personal, political, and endless information through something so simple as the internet web space even with little or no experience and knowledge with html. Popular blogging sites such as blogger and xanga have paved the way for every Tom, Dick and Harry to obtain an alias, choose a template and begin posting ramblings of their every day happenings or opinions of what is going on in the world. Other blogs that are clearly the mission of one to create and feed the purpose, develop and fund the site have become popular too and in many cases valued sites for information.
It seems the initial purpose of blogging was intended to open the doors to many Americans and those around the world to share experiences, attitudes and beliefs relating to a specific topic at hand. Political blogs today are the basis to exercise the right of free speech in the United States.
The popular web encyclopedia states that “a blog is a website in which items are posted on a regular basis and displayed in reverse chronological order.” Blogs are beginning to appear in more places including billboards advertising a blog, on television, and web searches for blogs of all shapes and sizes. So where did they begin?
A man named Dave Winer has assumed credit for creating one of the first web logs and owns up to the longest running blog (1997 to present) in the history of weblogs. He states that “A weblog is kind of a continual tour, with a human guide who you get to know. There are many guides to choose from, each develops an audience, and there's also comraderie and politics between the people who run weblogs, they point to each other, in all kinds of structures, graphs, loops, etc.”
