Honestly, because it was cheaper for the animation team to just draw 3 fingers and a thumb. Helped meet the budget requirements.

What I have read is that animators have a tradition of not using the 5th digit because "it doesn't do anything." If you had to slave long hours drawing every frame by hand, you would try to make your life easier too...

in an old episode lisa is studying and there is reference in her book to what the human race will look like in years to come and it suggests that in the future all humans will have 5 fingers. other than that there is no other reference as to why they only have 4

Cartoons have classically had only four fingers on each hand since having all five would cause the hand to appear too large or disproportionate.
