adat perkahwinan Melayu is really a wide area of subject. it actually depends on the bride-and-groom's background, parents, which 'negeri' they came from.
but a usual Malay wedding must consist 'adat merisik' where the grooms family came to see the girl's family and announce their son's intention of marrying the girl.
when the girl agrees, there's 'majlis pertunangan' where the couple is officially engaged, and the ceremony is supposedly also a discussion on the wedding date. but most of the couple nowadays have already decided on the date. they either got engaged just for formality, or just engaged for a few weeks or a few months, or didnt get engaged at all.
during the 'akad nikah', its either held at the bride's house or mosque, conducted by her father or a close male family member or a tok kadi (imam). after the akad nikah, the reception is held depends on the family itself. those who can afford it, held the ceremony at the hotel or a ballroom. those whose houses are appropriate for a huge-size party held the ceremony at home. usually two more must-do things after 'akad nikah', 'bersanding' where both brides and grooms sat at nice 'pelamin' (nowadays its merely for taking pictures only) and 'malam berinai' (henna night).
'hantaran' is also quite compulsory for typical malay weddings. where its a tray of gift. usually 'hantaran' from the bride to the groom consists of 9 trays of clothes, men toiletries, cakes and other stuff. while there are usually 7 trays of 'hantaran' from the groom to the bride consists of 'wang hantaran' (money), clothes, women stuf (handbags, shoes, perfumes....)
ceremony usually held twice: once for the bride's side and another one for the groom's side..
hope this helps....fuuh~
