Brutus was one of the misguided senators that believed that Julius Caesar had corrupted the republic, and who if he was not stopped, would end the republic by ruling like a king.

Caesar's flagrant disregard of the Senate in crossing the rubicon, the military showdown between Caesar and Pompey, the Roman conquest of Egypt and Caesar's liason with Cleopatra, Caesar's use of friends and allies to fill senatorial positions, and finally Caesar's 'dictator for life', convinced some such as Brutus that Caesar was aiming to crown himself king or emperor and end the republic.

Fact of the matter was that it was the popularity of the tribunes such as Tiberius and Gaius, the military successes of Scipio Africanus against Carthage, the use of tribunes and continued holding of the consulate power by Marius, and the dictatorship of Sulla, had all contributed to the corruption of power in Rome.

Julius Caesar just topped off what had been two centuries of corruption and the increasing power of the military in Roman politics.

    He hated him.
some people think it was political-to protect the Roman empire.
some people think it was because his mother was Caesar's lover and Caesar might have been his father who never acknowledged him as his son.

brutus killed ceasar to save Rome from a suppposed tyrannical rule. Actually ceasar was the best king that rome had. Brutus was made to believe that he was the one to save his country.Brutus was the noblest of all men. He did not kill ceasar for personal gain

Why did brutus kill ceasar? umm you should ask why did all the senetors of the republic exept for mark anthony kill ceacar. Well they killed him because they wanted to save the republic of rome. because all the citezens luved julies. MArk anthony didnt kill him because he loved the way ceasar thought and he always followed him. What alot of people get wrong is that julies ceasar was a dictator. most people today think he was a dictastor or emporer. WRONG. everytime mark anthony offered to crown him, he denied itt and said he didnt want to be emporer. which the senators never really knew. well actually they knew but they did beleive it. Then by a soothsayer predicted the "ides of march" Mark Anthony warned ceasar but ceasar kept thinking the senators would dare. because he had "dictater powers" although he wasnt a diuctaterbecause they were still in the republic. And why alot of people think it was brutus is because he was the head senator and lead the "brutus tragety"...wait the brutus tragety? you might say. yes that day wasnt ONLY called the ides of march it was also called the brutus tragety because he then commited after that and made the republic fall. but brutus and the senutors made ceasar come into the senators hall (when mark anthony warned him again) and ceasar was honored ewenough to go. onece he walked in he heard "NOW!" (but it was in latin of course) then they stabbed ceasar 42 times. Now think of the name brutus for a second. Any words have some resemple enother word in the english dictionary. that word is "brute" and that is whjere the word "brute" came from.

Brutus thought that Caesar was changing Rome from a republic into a totalitarian regime and he wanted to put a stop to it.

He was a member of the conspiracy to prevent an empire forming.
Caesar was surprised because Brutus was a friend and he expected loyalty. Caesar also predicted that he same kind of assassination would happen to Brutus himself.

"Et tu, Brute" could mean either
And you also, my friend Brutus, do this ?
    or
And this kind of killing will happen to you also, Brutus.
