I did a similar trip last summer. Though mine was only about 2 months. But the way that I estimated, was to allot about 100 euros a day (if you actually want to enjoy the food and experience the culture of the places that you go to) ie. going out, shopping, museums, etc. I also made sure that I got a Eurail pass. You can get different plans, a flexible, a monthly, etc. depending on how much traveling you'll be doing. They also include certain ferry trips..like in between the islands of Greece, and to Italy from Greece, etc. There are a great deal of books on the subject of backpacking through Europe. A good one that I found that is specific to traveling Europe on a budget is Let's Go Europe. You can totally travel over there and see and do a lot on a budget..I would just suggest to do a lot of research and planning. Some countries are much cheaper to stay and travel and eat and do things in (like Greece, Austria, and some places in Italy) but all the others on your list..in order to stay in a convenient location, will cost you. Definitely get that book, and a Eurail pass, and a camera.

Humm, lets say a tickets for go and return - 1500$. For travel with train in Europe it is cheap, may be around 100$(it depends where you want to go) And eat-100$. But it also depends how much time you want to stay and you need to have more money just in case.

its not going to be as cheap as it used to be, the Euro is much stronger against the US dollar, staying at a hostel will cost you $25-50 per night, price of admissions if you want to see some stuff is up there as well, heck you will pay to use a toilet.

Seeing that a girl should think more about her safety you need more money than a guy to travel.
You can find in Switzerland still today private rooms in the countryside for $25 with breakfast p.e. in the province (Kanton)of Obwalden, central Switzerland near Lucerne while Lucerne and all bigger places are extremely expensive. Germany is a cheap country, the Supermarkets of Aldi are everywhere with good and cheapest food in Europe. Go to South Germany to see the nicest castles. Austria is expensive, Italy has civil prices only south of Rome, normally a glass of Coke costs $5. Italy is the country with the most sophisticated thieves around. Don't travel alone in the South of Italy when you are a girl. On the other hand Italy offers the greatest places of cultural interest in Euope and the best restaurants in public places, you never get the spaghetti from the day before! the best food at market places of the province which grows without treatments and is sold only in Italy. Famous olive oil and dry red wine best to buy at a framer's.
