Blurred pregnancy vision-- glasses vs. contacts?

I normally wear contacts to correct my vision. Both eyes are the same prescription (- 4.00) which is nice. For the past few days I have had blurry vision, like my contacts are no longer the correct prescription or they are not sitting on my eyes correctly. I have heard that this can happen during pregnancy (I am now 17 weeks). Anyway, I was wondering if maybe wearing glasses as opposed to contacts would help. I haven't had glasses in quite a while because they are so expensive, but if it's a matter of the contact lense sitting on my eye incorrectly due to water renention or whatever I thought maybe glasses would be better. Any suggestions or anyone with the same experience?

ooh man, you may have pregnancy hypertension. make sure you check it out with your doc cause blurred vision is a symptom of hipertension. hypertension in pregnancy is VERY DANGEROUS FOR MOM AND BABY.

glasses would probably be better, but get a very cheap pair. your vision could continue to fluctuate. when i was pregnant, my optometrist wouldn't even change my prescription because it's so up-and-down. if your vision is so bad, though, that you get headaches or can't read or drive, then insist on an inexpensive pair of glasses with a new prescription. or, get a pair you really, really love, because you may not want to fool with contacts after the baby gets here (think of late-night feedings and such), then just have the lenses changed as necessary. it's always good to have a pair of back-ups on hand anyway.

I experienced the same thing. Some days, I could barely read the computer monitor. I did not have hypertension. Sometimes, the excess blood volume in your body just presses on your optic nerve a bit. I never did find a way to deal with it other than squinting and using rewetting drops frequently. It seemed to abate a bit the further along my pregnancy progressed.

When I was pregnant, I had the same thing happen. Your eye shape can change while pregnant and if your contacts are getting uncomfortable, just wear your glasses. You have enough uncomfortable parts of your body right now- why add to them ;)

I agree with pp, my optometrist wouldnt change my Rx during my pregnancy becuase it could continuously change, however if you are experiencing blurry vision then like another poster suggested make sure you get checked out for hypertension as blurry vision is a symptom.

from "Pregnancy symptoms you should never ignore"

    • Visual disturbances such as double vision, blurring, dimming, flashing lights, or "floaters" (spots in your field of vision).

If you're not sure whether a symptom is serious, you don't feel like yourself, or you're uneasy, trust your instincts and call your healthcare provider. Your practitioner expects such calls. If there's a problem, you'll get help right away. If nothing's wrong, you'll be reassured.

Your body is changing so rapidly that it's hard to know whether what you're experiencing is "normal." Do yourself and your baby a favor and get any unusual symptoms checked out.
