Xanas and an over the counter sleeping pill (unisom)?
My sister had some bad things happen lately and responded by drinking herself silly for two weeks (massive amounts of wine) and 1 or two xanax a day. She had also been a drinker before that. She finally nearly collapsed from dehydration, lack of food, etc. She had to go to the hospital where they rehydrated with an IV and gave her a prescrip for xanax for her anxiety and heart palp. (due to the still stressful situation). She took the xanax three hours ago and wants to go to sleep but is feeling very shaky (maybe alcohol withdrawal) and her heart is pounding. She would like to take a unisom (over the counter sleeping pill). Is that adviseable? She hasn't drank today at all and she had the 1mg tablet of xanax.
Thanks for any info.

I wouldn't suggest it, she has had enough in her system, try a cup of chamomile tea with a little honey, works great for sleep and won't interfere with any medication plus it hydrates.

I am glad she is getting help, but why didn't they keep her? Will she be seen as a out patient. When she gets a little more stable go with her to a AA meeting some other people are a lot worst off then her. She will come out of there feeling a whole lot better. As for the xanax, I think she is better off doing another 1mg of xanax then unisom. I take two 5mg at bedtime.Just make sure she doesn't drink with them. Keep me informed and give her a hug for me.

I would suggest that she take nothing, prescription or otherwise. So she went to the hospital originally because she drank too much and took too much xanax and they gave her more xanax? Your sister needs counseling not more drugs of any kind. If it's an emergency call the mental health crisis line, which should be located in your bookphone or call 411. If it's not an emergency get a referral from the hotline on Monday. Good Luck!

I am in recovery for taking xanax and drinking alcohol. I promise you it is Very addictive and will kill very fast, especially when taking the 2 together.
It takes a short time for her body to need this drug, even within 2 weeks. If she tapers off now she will be fine.
It also sounds like she may have an addictive personality to mix the drug with alcohol when it warns you many times on the bottle not to do that.
Mixing anything with xanax is not good, one time I took a allergy night time pill while on xanax, and I was out in left field the whole night and wide awake. Grapefruit is also very bad to mix.
Perhaps she is having some hard times right now, but it will get much worse having to withdraw from a benzo. Benzo's Are Very Addictive..... I am Thankful to be alive.

Pharmacists are almost as good as drs and frequently know more about drugs; there are 24 hour pharmacies, please call one and ask the pharmacist, no one here would know unless they were either a physician, a pharmacist or an RN.
