Approximately how many miles per hour does the average person bike (at a leisurely pace)?

I see you're getting a wide range of speeds here. I'll put it this way IMHO: The average non-cyclist adult on a multi-speed bike will maybe average 9-12 mph as an easy pace - a stroll if you will on flat terrain. Average sport or training cyclists on good road bikes will find that pace painfully slow. A leisurely ride to me is around 14-15 mph. Most ardent cyclists (me included) prefer a moderate ride when not riding hard that's maybe 15-18 mph on a road bike. It's all in the bike, terrain, conditioning and mind set. If you're riding a beach cruiser with soft tires you'll be slower.

I cruise at about 15-20 mph. The answer will depend on the steepness of the terrain, level of fitness of the rider, etc.

Most of our cycling team recently went on a leisurely ride with our wives and girlfriends on paved roads through a wildlife refuge. Our average speed was 10.6 mph. If the team was cycling hard, we would have averaged slightly over 20 mph.

Our group averages 15.5 mph in hilly terrain (southeast Ohio). When on the flat it's more like 17mph. To us its leisurely. Our age group is 40-55. Don't know if we are average or below average people!

The 17-18 Mph mark, is a nice leisurely pace to keep, without running yourself into the ground.

I commute to work 12.5 miles each way and it is relatively flat and I average 16 to 17 MPH without killing myself so that I can still work.

Between 7 to 12 mph is a nice pace for cruising. I tipycally ride at a pace of 13 to 18 mph, however I'm on a road bike.
