What's the weight of the average baby born in the United States?

My sister-in-law is a pediatric nurse and when my daughter was born in August she said that the average weight of a newborn is 6lbs. 5 oz. My daughter was 6lbs. 6oz.

I took a child development class in high school and we learned that the average baby weight at birth is 7lbs 8oz. and 19 inches long. But babies can range (at full term) from 6-8 pounds (or more) and from 19-21 inches long. My son was 8lbs 9.5oz and 21 inches and my daughter was 7lbs 8.5oz and 19 1/2 inches.
