Am invited 1100am garden wedding. invite says formal what do you wear? is all black cocktail dress appropriat

Garden wedding 11.00am invite says formal? then at 2.00pm later a dressy casual BBQ . What is appropriate for this a summer cotton dress, black chiffon dress, black/.white skirt and top or dressy top over white pants/ Am really in a quandary as most weddings these days are informal (neat and casual even) HELP HELP

I'd go with the summer cotton dress or black and white skirt and top. White pants and BBQ might not work well together. Since it's outdoors, I might even wear black pants and a semi dressy top, if you have black pants.

Rule of thumb NEVER wear white to a wedding - it makes you look like you are competing with the bride - very naughty!

Until recently black has not been acceptable either however now black is acceptable, especially for afternoon and evening affairs.

In your case I would be looking for a nice cocktail dress or skirt and blouse in soft pastel colours - safe and classy.

Unfortunately, if it's designated formal, that means a long gown, not a cocktail dress.
For the barbecue, I'd go with changing to the summery dress.

I wouldnt recommend a black cocktail dress for a garden wedding at any time of day. For a city weddng, yes, black would be appropriate, but not for a garden wedding. I also wouldnt change clothes, find something that will work for both, pants and a dressy top can be versatile for both a formal morning wedding and an afternoon BBQ. Or you could go with a pretty flowy floral print dress, that will be versatile too.

Just get a sweater or blouse to wear with a skirt to the ceremony. Then you can wear the same top but with jeans to the reception in the afternoon.

Try a dressy little summer dress. Like a floral cocktail. I think that could be dressed up with some fancy jewelery and shoes. And later you can put on some flip flops. Brides put formal now so that people don't show up in shorts.

I would wear the dressy top over the white pants. You can make it more formal with nice shoes and jewelry. It should also carry you over to the BBQ, with a change into more casual shoes.
