I just bought 2 dwarf hamsters today and the pet shop owner wasnt for sure what sex they were.?

Well how can you tell if one of my dwarf hamsters was in heat (if 1 is a girl)??? i need answers please! thanks

Sexing hamsters can be tricky, especially when they are young.
Syrian males are usually more obvious. Once they have reached 4 weeks old they will have noticeable testicles that hang down below the rear end.
Male Dwarves will have testicles as well, but they are less obvious. Also male Dwarves have a scent gland near the umbilicus (belly button). All male hamsters are capable of retracting their testicles up into the abdomen.
Female Syrians, if the hair is short enough, will have noticeable nipples. There are two rows of nipples that run parallel on either side of the belly. Female Dwarves also have nipples, but they are typically much smaller and much harder to see.
The easiest way to tell if your hamster is a male or female is to look at the distance between the two openings at the rear. This is the same with all hamsters, male or female.
In males the anus (opening for excreting feces) and the penis (which is kept tucked up inside a small opening) are further apart. In females the anus (opening for excreting feces) and the vaginal opening (which leads to where the female organs are located) are much closer together in comparison to the male. Well, i have a female hamster and when mines in heat she sleeps extra time and she will groom herself extra

It is really hard to tell if they are in heat, but mine are usually more grouchy when they are in heat. If you want to know if they are male or female:
1) flip the hamster over in your hand or sit it on a clear surface
2) find the anus
3) if the sexual opening is almost touching the anus it is a girl if the sexual opening is about 1-2 cm away from the anus it is a boy.

In young hamsters it can be very hard to tell. This is most likely why your pet store was not sure.

In order to tell the difference between a male and female, look for a small peach/pink bump. That should be the male's genitals. Males have 2 openings that are further than females. The genitals and anus of the females are so close that you can't tell the difference. Here is a link that may help:

look up online how to sex a hamster and for now keep them in seperate cages
if by then you still cant tell either leave them in those seperate cages or take them to your vet to sex
