Giving Plasma?
I am a college student and am in desperate need of some gas money. If I give plasma the blood bank here they will pay me $50.00. My girlfriend says its stupid but I am litterally running my car on empty and all of my paychecks go to rent money and insurance. Does this hurt to give plasma? How often can I do it? I was thinking if I did it twice a month I could make some extra gas money but would it be healthy?

Hi Jim! It is not stupid! You are saving lives! Hospitals always need more blood. I say , Go for it!! I'm not sure how many times they'll let you do it, but do it as often as you can! That's a great way to pick up 50 bucks, and help people at the same time. Good deal.
Bless you and good luck! :)

When I was unemployed I used to donate plasma 2x a week. The needle is rather large and scary because it pumps the blood back into you. It dosent really hurt though and takes like an hour or so. At the place I went to you just laid back and watched a movie for an hour. If you are in a pinch it is not a bad option. You get some cash and you are helping someone out. I had no ill effects other than some minor pain where they inserted the needle. I did it for several months.

I dont know about TWICE a month. All i know is that there are people who donate blood every 3 weeks (which is once a month). make sure you're not anemic or something - that you're healthy. It's best for you to go ask the doctor (it's more accurate and safer than the answers you get here) In that way, he could give a check on you and see if it's completely fine for you to go donate twice a month. Goodluck. I know it's a difficult situation when we're hard on money.

I'm surprised there's still hospitals in the US that actually pay people to give blood. It's proven that blood donated this way has a higher chance of being infected with HIV and HCV because unreliable people (drug users or people with shoddy sex histories) donate to get a quick buck whereas serious people that do it voluntairly give blood for free.
I can't say for myself what's the experience like, I'm too underweight to donate unfortunately.
