1. Oral: we learn about consumption
2. Anal: we learn about power, control, and the value of non-utilitarian items. Sub-types of this are anal expulsive and anal retentive.
3. Phallic: we learn about interpersonal relationships and about intimate relationships
4. Latency: we learn about work and productive, meaningful effort. we also learn proper sex roles through identification with the same-sex parent.
5. Genital: we apply all that we have learned. the basic drive is to find a mate and procreate.
Freud's take, frequently misconstrued, was the focus on the tension created in each region and process over time. He merely states that we are reducing the tension of our needs, like hunger, by satisfying them, like breast-feeding children. Fixation is the continued attempt to meet the needs of previous stages in the current stage or attempting to utilize strategies for tension reduction in the current stage that worked in a previous stage. Fixation is caused by excess gratification of needs or inadequate gratification of needs, each resulting in tension reduction in an early stage.

The 5 phases of psychosexual development, as identified by Freud (oral, anal, phallic, latency, and genital). Freud's theory has been criticized for being too focused around sexuality. He thought that "personality" develops around how we resolve these "pleasure sources" during the 5 phases.
1) Oral Stage: (occurs during first 18 months of life) This just means an infant's "pleasure" is centered around oral stimulation (i.e. passifyers, bottles/feeding, chewing on fingers, etc.)
2) Anal Stage: (occurs between ages 1 1/2 to 3 years) This is describing toddlers facination and pleasure of learning to gain control over their bowels and pleasure that arises from contracting the muscles associated with the anus.
3) Phallic Stage: (occurs between ages 3 and 6) This comes from to the latin word "phallus", which means "penis"; and refers to the child's discovery of pleasure associated with the genitalia and control of that pleasure. Also when Freud identifies the "Oedipus complex" which is the child's desire to replace the same-sex parent, and enjoys affection from the opposite-sex parent. (wierd, I know)
4) Latency Stage:(occurs between 6 and peuberty) This is when Freud thought children repress all thoughts of sexuality and develops social and intellectual skills. Allows children to channel emotions into "safe" zones, and forget about stress of the phallic stage.
5) Genital Stage: (from peuberty on) This is the the time of "sexual re-awakening". Sexual pleasure is seeked outside of the family and loving relationships and independent functioning are developed into adulthood.
Hope this helped!
