I play field hockeyy and i'l tell you as much as i can. There are11 players on the field. You have your 3 defenders...3midfielders...your goalie..and 4 forwards.. I play right or left back (defense) you don't run as much as midies and forwards.. midies run the most..since they have control of the ball alot of the times. i was like you i tried out in 9th grade..and made JV..i was on JV in 10th grade too..then in 11th i made Varsityy.. some rules is that you can't let the ball hit your feet..you can't hack your stick.. and when you drive the ball you can't have high stick..those are some of the rules.. theres also obstruction.

just practice over the summer..practice drives..slaps..pushes..all that.

i hope this helped a little bit. :]

Hey there, best of luck with the tryouts!

There are a tonne of rules but mainly remember:

Ball cant hit ur feet or any other part of ur body except ur hands if they are on ur stick,
U can only use the flat side of the stick, and the side edge for tommahawk hits,
U cannot shield the ball with your body if you dont have control,
The ball cannot be lifted in a dangerous manner,
A breach by a defender in the circle will result in a penalty corner,
A deliberate breach by a defender preventing a goal results in a penalty stroke, taken from 7 yards from the goals,
    There is no offside,
To score on a penalty corner the ball must pass below the back boards from the first hit, although it can be flicked,
You cannot sub on a penalty corner,
Even if time is blown a penalty corner must still be played out,
If a defender unintentionally sends the ball over the backline it is a long corner,
If intentionally, it is a penalty corner,
You cannot interfere with an opponents stick or body (ie hacking),
Your team mates cannot shield you and the ball from an opponent (third party obstruction),
You cannot play at the ball above shoulder height unless defending a goal,
When taking a free hit the opposition must be 5 meters from the ball,
When within 5 meters of your attacking circle, ALL players must be 5 meters from the ball...

I know I have left out a LOT here, but there is so much to remember! haha GOOD LUCK!!! :)
