Should I do a tour or self drive in the Kimberley region?

I'm planning to visit the Kimberley region in Western Australia for 10 days or more and am wondering whether it's better to self drive or do a tour. Also what sort of things should I definitely see & do?

The Kimberley is a pretty rugged part of the universe. I would not recommend self-drive unless you intend to stay on the main drags (and even they can be problematic at times) or have a fair bit of 4WD experience.

It is spectacular country, with some great escarpments and gorges. The Bungle Bungles are a must.

The Kimberley region's really quite rugged but absolutely beautiful if you do a 4WD self-tour. There are various 4WD trails of different difficulty to choose from and do the necessary research before you embark on this adventure. It can be REALLY FUN, driving through rivers and stuff especially around Fitzroy Crossing, but do note that if you get stuck, the fun may all end there. Have some form of satellite communication if you know you're going deep into the outback and have loadsa water, fuel and other supplies. DON'T try to navigate the Canning Stock Route unless you're a really really really seasoned 4WD-er or super 'garang'. You need to arrange fuel-drops by air in advance and have sufficient planning.

I live in the Kimberley, Fitzroy Crossing to be exact. El Questro is beautiful, you would want to do that. Broome is also a tourist attraction. Kununurra is a lovely town to see as well. (It's near El Questro). Cape Leveque is amazing for the scenery. If you come to Fitzroy, do at tour of Geikie Gorge, it's beautiful.

self drive is a lot funner and more adventurous. probably cheaper as well. you just don't get the same experience on a tour. however the Kimberley is a fairly undeveloped place and you will need a land rover, plenty of supplies of food and water and be wary of the crocodiles its not a stereotype. go to broome and the bungle bungles avoid mining places

I'd recommend flight tours as it's a vast area your thinking about visiting.

Do a tour they supply all the food and drink and even cook it for you and doing a tour you will meet some interesting people as well as be taken by experts to the best spots up there.
Have a ball.

Without question a tour is your best option. The time scale and assumed experience make a self guided thing likely to be a flop (if nothing less serious happens!).

A self driving tour would be fun, but not the best idea because of the dangers. Take a tour, but make sure it includes a boat river trip and helicopter/plane flight-they are great for seeing stuff

I would do a tour although we have done part of it in our 4WD most parts are rugged.I can recommend ElQuestro Station as an area to visit.
