Safe to cruise to Mexico right now?

My husband and I are scheduled to cruise to Mexico this Sat (5/2) and are concerned about the pig flu. Any suggestions out there? We are going to Puerto Vallarta, Cabo and Mazatlan. We don't plan to get off the ship but know many will... I guess I am asking, should we cancel?

No - do not cancel your trip. I am sure that many of your fellow vacationers are experiencing the same concerns and are unlikely to get off the ship as well. Such trips are usually a pain to plan and cost a pretty penny, so don't let a flu outbreak in a 3rd world country stop your long awaited getaway.

Bring an ample amount of alcohol-based sanitizers, use them every time you get back into the cabin and you're likely to avoid getting sick.

Chances are, you're probably going to jump out of your shoes every time you hear someone sneeze or cough. If you're a paranoid person, then maybe its better to preserve your nerves and not go. If you try to enjoy your time, the scenery and the entertainment, then you're going to have a great vacation.

I suggest that you not to go Mexico. The swan flu is getting really serious!! Canada just got its first case and USA is having a lot. But if you really still want to go, I can't push you!! Just go and be careful!! Don't go to close contact with people there and wash your hands often with soup!!

As much as I know, the whole problem is in Mexico city (strange! normaly the transmision from animal diseases to humans occur in the rural areas, but a city?!).

My parents live in Monterrey in the north of my country and there continue the life as normal as before. But one never know!

I would recomend you, if you go, the go down with a protection for your mouth and wash as much as possible your hands. But if you are very nervous, it´s better to cancel, because i think to be anxious during your vacations it´s not really great.

Goood vacations, wherever you finally go!

Don't worry about it. The flu outbreak is in the Mexico City area and no where near where you're going. Plus, the ship would not sail if they thought there was really any danger of people getting sick. If it were dangerous, they would cancel the cruise or reroute the ship to different ports of call (like up to Canada or something). Just follow their instructions on taking certain precautions or avoiding certain places. You'll be fine.

Well you could stay on the ship...but if people get sick you may too. (I heard it as swine flu, but any flu is bad :]) Contact the cruise lines and ask about it like say is it safe to go to Mexico, since this swine flu is going around. They may change ports. I went to Mexico on a Carnival cruise this Jan and it was beautiful. I think like for Carnival if you stay in the cruise ship area (Carnival has an area when you get off the boat in most ports that are safe from the dangerous Mexicans, and you have to be qualified to work in those areas (I believe.) In the US they have been mild so far. Also maybe you could call up your doc and ask what he would recommend. Just wash your hands a lot, and if someone is coughing, or sickly in an area move away. I think if you cancel now you won't get a refund (Carnival I know) but maybe if you tell them you might get some back. Have fun!! (If your going on Carnival Bon Voyage!!)

I am going on the same day, and i just called our cruise line and they said They are worried about their passengers and their crew, and they will contact you if they will cancel the cruise. But the thing is that if WE cancel we dont get our money back. I am so worried. So far I have gotten mixed answers.

If it is not safe, cruise lines dont go there. I have heard that all trips to mexico have been CANCLED. Many ships will be re scheduled with another port.
