'Smell' from 'reject shop'?

Question

Every time I walk into this type of stores, there is a distinctive smell that I keep smelling. I'm not just talking about 'Reject Shop', but also the various random $2-ish shops, etc. It's not a sweet smell, it's not a bad smell, but it smells very chemically.
I am curious. What is it?
