in baseball, when a player is substituted to hit for another hitter. In the American League where there is the Designated Hitter and the pitcher doesn't hit, the pinch hitter isn't used as much, only to produce favorable match ups later in games. In the National League where the pitchers hit, pinch hitters are used more frequently. When the pitcher's spot is coming up in the line up and the pitcher is nearing the end of their pitch count, the manager will sup in a hitter then when they go on defense, sub another pitcher in their place. National League teams are more likely than American League teams to keep pinch hit specialists on their rosters. Matt Stairs of the Phillies is a good example of this.
