By the age of 40, if their affection for each other was genuine, there would not be a lengthy engagement . So the time that they have a chaperone in attendance would be minimal...

It would be recommended that their courtship take place the same as any other courtship. A chaperone is still a good idea as 40 year olds dating are just as likely to have, um, 'feelings' toward eachother as teenagers.

They wouldn't *need* a chaperone. They would want a chaperone who can testify to the community that there was no funny business.
