ahhuhh, noone here mentions about what i am going to say! wonderful.
Ok, I have a Lab and he is just beautiful to me =]
Feed your dog one raw egg per week. It leaves her coat shining.
Avoid canned food (Its very bad for their health but you might like to to give her just once for a while such as her b-days, when she is good or something like that. I buy canned food (by canned i mean like, wet food that are already stored and prepared). I give my Lab like once every 1-2 months or so.
Prepare your dog with quick and easy meal of dried dog food. I use the Pedigree one but just check on the back of the package.
Maybe some of your dinner like vegies, beef etc (not too fat)
Little pieces of raw/cooked carrots.
And it will leave you dog's coat perfectly lovely and shining. Trust me..
Also: If you want it even shiner.. brush it often at least every day because you brush yourself everyday anyways. Minimum should be once a week.
Plus: Some dogs don't like raw eggs!
And oh yes, dry food is much better than wet!
Good Luck =]

You can feed a good quality meat based diet. Many small dog people feed a combination of wet and dry. There are many good brands out there. You are better off looking at the ingredients instead of the brand or price. Also keep your dog in good weight. There are way too many fat chihuahuas in the world.
Personally I have had good results with Purina Proplan.

A good quality, high protein puppy food for small breed dogs, Iams has such product, as does Pedigree. I start my puppies out on Pedigree high Protein food and then switch to large breed as they get bigger.
But you can stay with small breed .

Try to buy the best food you can afford. I use a mix of the Purina ProPlan/ toy or small adult maintenance or all stages. (better then some puppy foods, and Kirkland Organic Natural Chicken and rice. AND The Proplan "sensitive stomachs..... it is whole salmon and sweet potato. GREAT for the coat and skin/ eyes...... and its small enough for a chi to chow on :-)
Kirkland is 20.00 for 40 lb.s Some puppy foods make them gangly and growth spurts un even. IMO
but there is Canadae, reasonable price also, Wellness, read ingredients, research dog foods online too.
I shop at a very helpful supply store called K-9 mound rd, Warren , Mi. Best prices, and all you could want or look for is there cheaper!

dry food helps with their teeth,
especially when they are littler and are growing teeth,
i give my dog the eukanuba chicken little bits.so he can easily eat them
although it is kinda spendy bout $10-12 dollars for a 8 pound bag.
but my dog loves it and it last him like 2 months.

Wet food is too rich for puppies...but you can gradually introduce it if you want to.
Bakers complete is the best. Go into the store and look at the nutrients and stuff on the back of the bags.

Just about all feed stores and pet outlets have holistic sections.
You will likely find at least 20 high grade brands to choose from.
There is no "best" food other than the one your animal does well on.
