Question

In 2009 the total number of participants in Aussie Rules reaching 103,358, the 5% growth for the year was spread evenly throughout the state with several regional and metropolitan areas showing a total increase of over 20% for the year. The total participation has seen steady growth from the 27,675 Queenslanders taking part in some form of the game in 2000 viz over 400% growth in 9 years !


The figures are calculated from the amount of participants who take part in more than six weeks of any AFL program. In Queensland these programs include junior, youth, senior, veteran, women’s, NAB AFL Auskick, school and recreational football.

Of course, Demetriou and the AFL would have done their homework, the concessions will help Gold Coast off to a flying start.
Heap of expatriot footy fans from the southern states will ensure good crowds.

One thing for sure Terri it will bring an end to "tanking" for awhile!

I still don't see the need for another team in QLD...QLD is and always will be a rugby stronghold (like NSW is)...I just hate to think how other clubs from other states are going to be effected due to the high round draft picks we won't be getting for the next few seasons.

Yes. I hope so.

It will do good to build up the AFL outside of Victoria. Then the Vic dominated AFL commission wouldn't have free rein in doctoring up the fixtures (to suit Vic based teams) as they do now.

The more teams outside Vic the better.

Good to see that QLD has finally caught up with what the rest of the country (apart from NSW) has known for a long time - Aussie Rules is a great sport to watch!!!!!

I can't help but wonder if there has been a similar study completed in NSW????

Says alot for the New Gold Coast footy team coming in, they will have plenty of support and the Brisbane/Gold Coast rivlary should be very strong and exciting!

these stats don't impress me.
what impresses me is that the gold coast is going to have its own side and its about time.
