Can I get around New Zealand without a tour guide?

Question

My friend and I are heading to NZ in a week, she's been there before but I haven't. I'm just wondering if it's easy to get around NZ by ourselves. We're planning to visit Rotorua and Auckland. We're going to be using Taxis alot to travel around Rotorua, do you think it'll be expensive?

You don't need a guide, taxi's are expensive reckon.
I'm sure there's buses going around Rotorua as it's a touristy place. Heading out to the attractions there, you wouldn't have a problem i reckon. Getting to Rotorua from Auckland you can use a bus like Intercity.
When in Auckland the public transport isn't the best but it'll do the job. Bus's, trains and ferrys. You'll might have to double up at time's and go on one bus then onto another to get to your destination. As Auckland is fairly big.

Most major cities and a few minor ones have "I-Site" which are for travellers and tourists. They are very informative and have maps and all the tourist attractions in the area. The roads from Auckland down to Roto-Vegas are pretty good and well signed so a hire car would be a good idea.

Just remember when you are driving that when you are turning left into a street and a car wants to turn right into the same street you must give way. Think of it like every intersection has a roundabout. In Australia this is the exception to the give way to your right rule.

Yeah! If you have the sense of direction and also you need a map preferably GPS or bring a notebook/netbook because there's a lot of free WIFI establishment for your research to have a walkthrough in New Zealand.

You sure won't need a guide & your Aussie Dollars will get you better value over there ....I'd advise you to do a bit of research on your destinations before you get there ....work out what you want to see & then get yourself a good map.

Why not hire a car. so much more freedom and you can pick them up for under $30 a day. Otherwise there are trains and buses. Taxis I would only use at night if you need to

i hear rotorua taxi drivers accept cookies as payment so its pretty cheap
