NRL: Double Try concept. How do you see it working?

A double try option was mentioned as part of the All-Stars match, however it was a bit light on with respect to detail.

"The Indigenous and NRL All Stars will be able to opt for an extra play rather than a conversion in an attempt to score four more points in the match." - Source: http://www.dailytelegraph.com.au/sport/n…

Firstly, would an extra play be another tackle or another set of six?

Secondly, how would the attacking team get the ball back?
- Line drop out?
- Scrum?
- Tap from 20 metres out in line with where the try was scored?
- Other

Finally, on a successful double try, should the attacking team get the ball back from the kick off or should it be like ESL where the team who had been scored against gets the ball back?

What do you think of the double try?

What happens if there's a penalty try?

Do you get 2 extra play attempts?

Asker's Comment:
Exactly. Not only is it a stupid rule but they have really failed to explain the rule properly, let alone even establish a rationale for it.

To hear that it's being trialled in pre season matches as well is shocking news. It means they are considering it seriously.

Yeah I agree it was a bit confusing. I reckon they would get another set of 6 from the 20 as a tap or a scrum. I think its a bit silly - a lot of people think its too NFL-ish but to me I just dont see why we need to change what is already the best sport in the universe.

I kind of liked 1 rule from Super League which was if you score - you kick off. It interrupts momentum where a team have defended and defended and are tired, then give away a penalty and the team that just scored gets another try. It seemed to stop the blowout scores where 2 teams were closely matched then one runs away with it.

Mind you I love league as it is so why change?

Not a bad idea just for this game, i wouldnt like to see it in the NRL but here, yeh would be good, i know in gridiron, you can take the PAT or point after touchdown/conversion or go for whats called a 2 point conversion, where you get 1 play from 5 metres out to score and if you dont its just a kick off, i would love to see maybe a tap from 5 metres out and just go for it with all 13 and see some crazy second phase, and if its a knock on, forward pass or the other team gets the ball, the play is dead and they just go back for a kick off, and yeh get it or not, the try scoring team will get the ball back, sound ok?

i don't mind the idea but it would get very confusing throughout the year if it were to be introduced into the game

and i think they get 1 play (1 tackle) to attempt to score another try
and also do they get to attempt the conversion for the second try if they do score another one?

and i would say they would probably get the ball back at the 20m for a tap but not sure if it would be in line from where the try was scored.

and on a successful double try, i think the attacking team should get the ball back like a normal try so they get rewarded for their effort and riskyness

I don't like it, and why give up the 2 points for a chance at 4 more.

As it is after a try you get possession back anyway, so just get another try then.

I think this is a stupid idea. Why not change the game to gridiron. Have a 13 man team for attack and another 13 for defence. Fans like the game the way it is, why fix something thats not broken. If they want to make the game more exciting bring back that you can strip the ball and rake for the ball in the play the ball, putting more back onto ball security.

This idea is just to left field for me.

I reckon it's a pretty good idea just for this game, if it's a tough conversion why not have a shot at another try instead. If the attacking teams gets a 20m restart after a try it would definitely add excitement to the game. If ithe double try is successful the attacking team should get the ball back from the kick off as usual.

I think it is a stupid idea if you really want to make the game exciting bring back the real scrum where the opposing team had a chance of the ball back.

It's being trialled in a pre season game. It may be scrapped. I'm not a fan of the idea.

    Stick to the basics

I wouldn't even experiment with it.

You do realise that NRL is one letter away from NFL.

Sheesh, you score a try and before you can catch your breath you get another dig.
Sounds tough on the player but great for us fans.

Throw away 2 points and then maybe knock-on or have the ball stripped?
Points on the board are safer .. leave the scoring alone.

Not the best idea they've had .. and how about the video ref wearing a microphone?
Who comes up with these notions? Why not fix some of the other problems in the game,
such as referees and linesmen taking the field without their glasses!!
