there are indeed a lot of criticisms that could be made.
The selection for the last ashes test was a huge mistake - in fact it was one that baffled many experienced players. in my opinion, not including a single bowler with ashes experience in the team until the 4th test was also an error, as our bowlers, without anyone on the field who could give them timely tips and advice, failed to adopt to conditions until quite late. you can add to this criticism of the strange reasons given for selection decisions (ie, clarke was dropped cause he was 'too much like siddle'), and a series of self-contradictory statements (made withing 24 hours of each other) regarding the selection of our openers and brett lee that have come out since then. not helping things has the fact that the selectors have been accused of laziness, and have had to defend not watching/being present at crucial domestic and international games involving fringe players. the statements that our bowlers performed very well when three out of four averaged more than 30 in the last ashes test does not add credibility to their performance-assesments.
but the bigger issue, i believe, is that a lot of people probably think partiality and personal grudges play too big a role in selection - ie, that the 'process' of selection is corrupted. there may well be a case that brad hodge should not be in our test team, despite his outstanding domestic performance. but, despite being widely recognised as the best twenty20 batsmen in the world, he cant get a look in into our poorly performing twenty20 team - that, to me, just smacks of revenge for his prior criticism of selectors. and hes not the only one. criticism of selectors should result in a fine, or some sort of disciplinary measures. but there is the perceptionn now that it will just as likely result in the end of your career.
another issue got to me personally, but i can understand if others have different opinions. lee was told a good performance in one day cricket would be the road back to test representation. he was then told, after performing exceptionally well in odi's and whilst in the last stages of recovering from injury, that a domestic game just before the 1st test was 'do or die,' and that his chances for selection were not great unless he performed exceptionally. the result - the aggravation of that injury! all that has achieved is a depletion of our bench resources - if not the end of lee's career. (i suspect they didnt want to pick him anyway, and that their statement regarding his performance in that game was just for the sake of establishing a pretext for doing so.)
having said all this, to be fair youd have to say the selectors did a great job in india, and, indeed, in the champions trophy.
in short, i personally would prefer to see hilditch go, but i think he should be encouraged to resign/retire, rather than be sacked - at least at this stage.
