Why are people writting off the Sydney Swans?

Most people are saying Sydney don't have a chance of making the 8, well I think thats rubbish

Look at what we've gained compared to some other clubs such as West Coast(no offense to anyone)

We needed a power forward, we have big Jesse White, Dan Bradshaw and Sam Reid who's pretty tall and can play half forward

We needed pace have Jetta, Kennelly, McVeigh, Kennedy, Rohan, Shaw, Mattner, Vespremi, Sumner

We needed a new group of players, we have, Kennedy, Mcglyn, Seaby, Mumford, Rohan, Dennis-Lane, Sumner, Jetta

We have our yong group now, all the oldies are gone, Leo Barry (retired), Barry Hall (traded), Micki O (retired), Jared Crouch (retired), Nic Fosdike (Retired) and a number of new faces coming in

We are off and running with the return of tagh kennely, we probably have the best half back line in the Comp, Kennely, Shaw, Mattner, Roberts-Thompson, Reid

Look at West Coast, Essendon, or Carlton I'm sure the Sydney Swans are definetly in their league

We have the goods with Adam Goodes, Brett Kirk, Jarrad McVeigh, Jude Bolton, and the new bloods and rising stars with new recruits

I may be a bit bias but tell me are the swans not good enough to challenge for even 6th spot

I know we lost good players to retirement and honestly that killed me cos I loved those guys - but with getting rid of Barry Hall (and his brain snaps) and solidifying our forward pack (go Jesse) we are looking pretty hot right now. Our draft picks have been great for once and with Kennelly now returning as a sort of leader in defense (old man haha) Im so looking forward to 2010.

I dont know many people that have serioulsy written off the Swans (aside from jealous remarks and Y!A's hehe). We are a force to be reckoned with definitely. Good questions and love the answers too :)

Of course they can challenge for 7th or 8th spot. But I rate Carlton and West Coast ahead of them, even Essendon to some extent.

P.s No offense taken, we've gained what is needed for OUR team, recent years we have shown that we have some of the best recruiters in the league, I have no doubt they have done the best in setting up our club.

the one person that you didn't mention is the coach.
paul roos is one of the best coaches going around.
he is the master of the flood. and did make other coaches start to look at the game from a totally different angle when he started putting it into play. what a mind.
and as we all know won the swanies there first flag in how long?
yes they have recruited well. and have some really good players.
especially mr dangerous goods (adam goodes). who to me is a marque player with out doubt.
    good luck to you.
your question has merritt. thanks for bringing it to our attention ok.

I dunno who is writing them off, but Sydney for me have always been one of those teams who will always be a challenge no matter what spot they are on the ladder. When St Kilda had to play Sydney this year for the second time I was extremely nervous before the match, because you just never know with Paul Roos and Sydney - they are a very smart team and have good tactics and are also very team-oriented. Alot of their players are under the radar too and underrated like Bolton, McVeigh and even O Keefe should be rated higher than he already is.

I'm calling it early, I reckon McGlynn is going to have a break-out year. He wasn't given a proper go at the Hawks even when he racked up 25 + possessions. Watch out for him!

They wont challenge for the flag but there more than capable of finishing around 6-8th.

I know how you feel though. Every year the Crows are tipped to drop out of the 8 but as always we prove the doubters wrong. It's only now that we're starting to get recognition.

I think Sydney are capable of doing the same but they'll need alot of things to go there way. They got a good mixture between youngsters and experienced players which is a good thing to have. Essendon and West Coast are ahead of Sydney imo, but not by much.

I never said they don't have a chance...they do and with the new players coming to the club you'll play better this season...Bradshaw is the key though if he stays injury free he will be a great pick up for the Swans...I'm excited to see Kennely back at the club after his stint back in his home country to win his Premiership like his Dad and Brother did...I certainly think provided Bradshaw is fit for the majority of the season the Swans will be right up there in the final 8.

They will be 1 of the teams battling for those last 2 spots in the 8 along with Carlton, Essendon and Hawthorn.

When you say people have been writing the Swans off, who are those people, most people that i talk footy to, don't really mention the Swans one way or the other I'm afraid, but that can be a good thing, they can 'sneak under the radar' so to speak. Get under other clubs guards.

You have made some good points about your Swannies, and I would agree they should make the top 8, anywhere from 5th to 8th would be my assessment of them.

At least Sydney is an honest team, no hint of tanking or drugs and Roos one of the best coaches going around.
All the best for the coming season

Thats just a load of nonsense it seems like your just naming everyone off their list. Maybe in a couple of years time top eight but for now its bottom four. But at least you said you might be being a bit bias.

Sydney are good -- they're the team no matter how horribly they're doing, teams don't like to face them.

They've just been falling short of the top 8 for the past year or so (but I think they made it in '08), but their list is young and developing and surely they'll rise.

As they say, its not over until it is.

Sydney will definately be in the race to close out the 8, it will be far too close to call as to whether they will be in i guarentee 6-10 but those teams will be more than likely seperated by percentage rather than points

I dunno but i think they will finnish 8th or 9th because the West Coast Eagles and Hawthorn hawks will be fighting there heads off for the top 8 in 2010

I agree. People are writing us off too soon. We have lots of good recruits as you mentioned, and I think it will be very interesting to see how Jesse White performs in 2010!!

I think the only major blow we suffered in the trade week was losing Darren Jolly; but with Seaby replacing him the blow has been lessened.

With Bradshaw now in the team, and our Back Line back to strength we only need our midfield to perform and we can become a real formidable force.

What really annoys me is how Robert Walls is always against Sydney Swans and hates everything about us. He is always bagging on our style of play which (in my opinion) was highly effective against most teams. He always wrote us off from the start and keeps claiming we're "one trick pony's", which is complete bollocks since our run out of defence proofs we have other playing styles.
