You lucky person you...I love Edinburgh. They have some of the best pubs along the Royal Mile leading to their castle. Anyway to answer your question. Typically you are booked straight through to your destination. (Make sure your luggage gets booked straight through too.) Which means you'll wait in Toronto inside the international terminal and inside their secure area. So during the layover, in TOR you can stay inside the secure area and not go through security/ customs/ passport. But stay inside the secure area. There are typically shops and restaurants inside the secure areas so you need not leave them. If you do leave those area, then yes you'll need to do them all over again. NOTE: While the above is all true, as a seasoned overseas traveler by air, sometimes I have been surprised. I landed in Vienna as a layover to catch the next leg to Kosovo. Both are international flights, in and out of Vienna. I figured we'd (I was with my wife) just stay inside the secure area after arriving and wait there to take the Kosovo flight. In fact, the flight attendant assured us that our outgoing flight would be boarding at the gate right next to our arrival gate. Did not happen that way. For whatever reason known only to the Austrians, upon arrival we had to leave our secure area to walk all the way through the terminal to the other end to catch our outgoing flight. And that meant we went through passport and customs to leave the secure area after landing in Vienna and then...go through security, and passport again to enter a new secure area for the Kosovo flight. In other words we had to stand in two long and very slow lines coming and going through Vienna. We almost missed our connection to Kosovo. My point, expect the unexpected in international flights, especially into and out of small airports.

  • Is £40000 good savings for someone?

Is that all? Do you also have investments? At your age you should have roughly 70% invested in equities, large caps found in the highest rated mutual funds for example. And 30% invested in interest bearing bonds...preferably tax deferred if there is such a thing in the UK. I'm a Yank and don't know your tax laws. My point, if the £40000 is really all in a savings account, then your money is not working hard enough for you at the rates of return that savings accounts typically return. And you need to put it to working harder with higher return rates, preferably now than later. Remember your goal is to have enough in the bank to live on without additional income after you retire. And that should last until you die (I personally have my retirement budget running until I reach 100 yo). In the US, that's about $2 million invested to be able to earn about $100,000 a year before taxes. That's enough to live well in all but the most expensive areas of the USA. Don't know about the UK living expenses, but you do. So you should be working it out as to how much you'll need in the bank when you retire in order to live the life style you want when you are no longer working. Bottom line, that £40000 might be enough if some of that money is in investments rather than savings and if you have a regular investment program that you follow that will reach your retirement goal. Otherwise, no it's not. ANS.

Those are the women who will actually share the load of a relationship. A true partner and best friend.

When the market and account drop, and they will, don't panic...keep up the monthly payments. Why? Because history shows that the market is ever increasing in the net. Which means when you put that money in while it's low eventually the market will go high and carry that investment up with it. I say initially invest "half" your holdings because you'll want to keep your savings account open as well as start the mutual fund.

Experience of others is that by lending money (a capitalist activity) to friends or family the lender is inviting relationship trouble. If you've ever watched Judge Judy on TV, you'll know this to be true. Many of the plaintiffs on that program are suing a family member or a one-time friend for money that is owed the plaintiff. And of course, borrowing to finance a business is a well-know capitalist activity that works for expanding the business or just paying the payroll.
