  • if there are no martial arts that are non-violent?

    why do a number of aikidoka and aikido resources promote it as a nonviolent art?

    Of course anything can be used to injure another person. a glass of water spilt deliberately on a slippery surface can cause a slip and fall injury. so yes aikido can be used in a violent manner to injure a person.

    However ueshiba said nonviolence is the true practice of Aikido.

    If ueshiba looks on nonviolence as true aikido how is this so if there are no arts that are nonviolent?

    is violence actually in the intent of use rather than in the art of aikido itself?

  • could a lot of martial artists today be said to be mixed martial artists when all is said and done?

    following on from an earlier question as to why a martial artist might cross-train other arts.

    firstly great answers from the community on that one.

    ok. take a shotokan practitioner. he starts at his local club at 10. he goes through college and is still practicing at 22. so he would have a solid base in his art. he takes a teaching contract in japan so he decides to train judo at the kodokan. cross-training in these arts is said to have been encouraged by their founders.

    He returns to the states with a rounder skillset than when he left.

    He goes back to training shotokan.

    However if a street altercation occurs he would use whatever works I would presume.

    Therefore, despite identifying himself as a shotokan practitioner, wouldnt he technically be a mixed martial artist when all is said and done?

    If so couldnt it be said of anyone who cross-trains?

  • why become multi-belt martial artists?

    ok. this is just an opinion question. no disrespect intended to anyone who does it. why, if one style has everything at a high level, do people feel the need to gain belts in multiple styles instead of investing the time getting to the higher levels in their original style? i can understand a karateka going on to learn kendo as there are no swords in karate. but someone getting to 4th dan in shotokan, going on to do some black belt in tkd and then one in tang soo do? how would that really benefit them as opposed to spending the extra time and becoming a 6th dan in shotokan? surely by investing more time in shotokan, and getting to the bunkai and groundfighting applications, there would be no need to go to another art.

  • javascript code ideas?

    Hi, I am new to javascripting as I am exploring it for creating a specialised calculation tool. just wondering if someone has an idea how I would code the following in javascript.

    A form where you enter 4 values.

    value A eg 1000, value B eg 300.

    output 1 is A - B eg 700

    Value C eg 500.

    output 2 is C - B eg 200

    Value D eg 50

    output 3 is output 2 as a percentage of output 1 eg 200 as a percentage of 700 ie 30% or whatever it really is

    output 4 is output 3 as a percentage of value D eg 30% of 50 eg 15

    I know how to produce all this in excel but looking at creating a form to run this calculation online embedded in a html document.

  • why won't my code work?

    I borrowed the following code from an online tutorial to build a calculator for working out soil volumes for garden beds. when I hit calculate it just blanks out the entered data instead of displaying a volume figure.

    <head>

    <script type="text/javascript">

    function cubeVolume(form)

    {

    var side = form.s.value;

    if(isNaN(side))

    {

    alert("Not a Number");

    document.getElementById("s").value = "";

    return false;

    }

    var volume = Math.pow(side,3)

    var volumeOut = roundTo4(volume)

    document.getElementById("cv").value = volumeOut;

    }

    function boxVolume(form)

    {

    var h = form.h.value;

    if(isNaN(h))

    {

    alert("Not a Number");

    document.getElementById("h").value = "";

    return false;

    }

    var w = form.w.value;

    if(isNaN(w))

    {

    alert("Not a Number");

    document.getElementById("w").value = "";

    return false;

    }

    var l = form.l.value;

    if(isNaN(l))

    {

    alert("Not a Number");

    document.getElementById("l").value = "";

    return false;

    }

    var volume = h * w * l;

    var volumeOut = roundTo4(volume)

    document.getElementById("bv").value = volumeOut;

    }

    function roundTo4(raw)

    {

    strFloat = raw.toString();

    var newFloat;

  • for karate instructors?

    a quick challenge that some of you may already have done. you are offered a chance to conduct an intro to karate as self defence course. run over 20 weeks. 1 night a week. your goal is to introduce people to karate. say 2 hours each lesson. the goal of the course is to produce people who have enough bunkai to handle themselves against someone untrained if they have no other option. i would guess some sparring skills would be compulsory. but how would you structure lessons and what would you teach?

  • kickboxing/muay thai?

    hi, just a question. for a beginners kickboxing/muay thai class. not a cardio class. how much of a class would be sparring? and how much of a disadvantage is someone at if they have slightly delayed reflexes due to minor vision issues? ie use glasses which obviously cant be worn in the ring.

  • ten no kata - why is it no longer taught in a lot of schools?

    in karate-do nyumon funakoshi says if one only practises this one kata and masters it one will realise the true meaning of karate-do. if this is so why have most shotokan schools stopped teaching this kata?

  • martial arts origins? myth v reality?

    ok. as a discussion tpoic. no right or wrong answer.

    as people have said here. nobody can teach themselves an art. ie self-taught is no good.

    having said this. a number of styles particularly kungfu styles claim founder learnt by watching blah animal.

    does that mean the founder was no good? as he taught himself. no way a mantis can spar a person.

    or does it mean the founder was a fraud?

    or are the founders just using the animals as a metaphor? ie grasp like this and it looks like how a mantis grasps?

  • jutsu versus do in the martial arts?

    this is a question that has resulted from a lot of recent thinking. it is more a discussion than expecting an answer.

    which do you think is more in the spirit of martial arts as their founders intended? and yes both do have their place in modern arts.

    Example, when karate was founded the focus was on staying alive not on being a calmer individual.

    these days amassing katas tends to be how one is measured on a ranking system. this tends to be how a lot of people measure karate practitioners.

    suppose the ancient masters were brought forward to today. who would they identify with more readilly?

    someone like mike tyson who spends hours each day learning to land a solid punch? or those who spend the same amount of time practising a solo kata until it looks perfect but who have never used their art?

    and no this isnt meant to criticise the forms themselves. just to contrast how diverse their teaching has become. some teachers teach few forms but lots of application and some teach many forms with no application.

    After all I am sure the taichi masters of old would look with dismay on the groups in the parks going through the forms for exercise.

    Basically has the DO gone too far from the JUTSU nowadays?

    Thoughts anyone.

  • the danger of hype in martial arts?

    hey, as a topic of discussion. isnt there a danger of hype in martial arts.

    for example. the 90% of fights go to the ground hype surrounding jiujitsu. A great art for groundwork by the way. But that figure is a statistic I have heard is taken out of context. I have heard it is a police statistic relating to police altercations with criminals. the aim being to take a criminal to the ground for an arrest. after all the majority of crims have to be pinned to be cuffed if they are resisting arrest. hence the statistic. this is then used to justify a systems publicity. isnt that dangerous? or the hype surrounding board breaking in certain korean systems.

    agree or disagree? why?
