Not that one “no” would get us in trouble. I mean, I work at a TJ Maxx and we have goals, like 7 per day, or 35 per week. If we fall short one week, the goal goes higher the next week! We have to stay within 1 percent of our transactions for a 3 month period or else we get a warning, placed under formal counseling if we fall short again the next 3 months, and fired if we fall short in the next 3 month period! The majority of our customers are regulars that already have the card, so obviously we’re not going to ask them. But when I do ask other customers, I usually get people who just chuckle and say, “No thank you, but I know you have to ask.” Sometimes, they even cut me off mid sentence with a quick enthusiastic “No”! The higher ups even forced an even stricter policy on us, saying we need to get 1 card by 1:00, and another by 3:00, or else our names go into a report! And most of the customers I ask aren’t exactly smart with credit because they’re always worry about the interest rate, which is 22 percent. Which I think implies that they’ve been frequently late on their bills and other credit cards they might have!
