Best answer: It kind of sounds like you are foisting your thoughts onto her life. If she can smile, yell, and tumble...she can make the squad. So, give her a tumbling lesson or two (or three or four) between now and spring, help her garner the skills she needs and help her learn the skills she needs to maimize her chances. Let her try out until she doesn't want to. She might make it. You never know. It's not like the movies where the mean girls are choosing the squad...she's 12. So she didn't make it. Big deal. Life is about lessons. Trust me. Without ANY cheer experience back in the day...I made it. As a new kid in a new town. It really isn't a popularity contest...it's a smiling, yelling, coordination contest. So help her practice all those skills and let her try if she'd like. I realize the tumbling is more important..trust me, if she can learn a round off back handspring...and can do multiples? She's in. I wouldn't tell her it's a popularity contest I'd just say, okay, what do you need to know to maximize your chances??? And then help her achieve those skills. In life skill matters. If she's fat and uncoordinated...she won't make it. If she's coordinated and can jump, smile, and (these days) flip? It doesn't matter her size. So, don't be the debbie downer...be her supporter.you are her parent. Parents should support their kids pursuits...not poision them to the "Unfairness" of everything. Let her try out...you've got months to help her prepare. get her some dance lessons and tumbling lessons and help her. (You tube has some dance tutorials). IF she's not good enough she'll figure that out on her own. But there are even pay to cheer squads in many places...if she wants to cheer.she should be able to do so somewhere. Good luck.

Best answer: Your mother is wrong. You can start in rec at any age. Gymnastics classes are not like ballet classes where you have massed ranks of people doing the same thing at the same time. There are far fewer participants compared to coaches & the training is far more individualised. That makes it very possible to incorporate different abilities & ages within a single class.

A good coach can also do a great deal to mitigate injury risk. Statistics on gymnastics injury give an exaggerated picture. They are based on hospital admissions & self reporting. Most of those are NOT within a structured gymnastics class, they are people trying to self teach. True gymnastics injuries are far more common at high level because of bigger skills, high repetition, & simply greater opportunity when training many hours in the week. For a beginner with a decent coach the risks are low. In fact the improved flexibility, strength, balance, positional awareness & control will reduce risk of injury from other sources.
