I tried to negotiate with him, but he wouldn't do anything to help. He got a judgement against me that I still can't afford and evicted me. My parents told me to quit my job and focus on school. They now pay my rent directly for a studio apartment that a friend of theirs owns, so I have no income at all. That was 3 years ago. Now the former landlord has passed away and the lawyer is demanding I pay immediately to settle the estate. My parents refuse to pay him because he was such a jerk in the situation. I've also been accepted to a grad program that will be an additional 3 years beginning this august before I start working. Will the estate continue to try to collect more than 3 years from now or will they likely drop it because it is just over $4k and probably not worth continuing to pursue for several more years?

She doesn't tell me to sell it but I feel she leaning that way. I maintain the house well by myself. The house is in my name and the will of mom was only for me. I don't feel my cousin should have a say about the house. Should I just keep house and isn't it all my decision?

Then I get a note on my door in November saying I'm going to get evicted if I dont pay my rent..I JUST MOVED IN and it's my 2nd month there so I'm like what are they talking about. So I went to the office and talked to the landlord and supposedly there was a extra move in fee that I want told about, upon moving in I asked them how much money in total do I need and I gave them every penny total. So apparently there was a extra fee that she neglected to tell me about and secretly it has builder over $300 in a month. Now she wants me to be on this payment plan to pay like $367 every 2 weeks until my balance is cleared. But it's not my fault, I feel like I'm getting taken advantage of and I need my money for other stuff. Is this illegal? Should I be paying her this extra money when it's her fault not mine?

I have a joint lease (jointly and severally liable) to rent an apartment, the other guy was around for 6 months but then left giving me very little notice. When he left, he had only paid one month’s rent though I did not know this at the time and the landlady didn’t mention that there was unpaid rent though she was really very easy going. This was all two years ago, in the past year the landlady’s daughter has finished college and now got involved with running the administration. She is much more business-like and she has addressed the unpaid rent with me, she is also convinced that I was aware that the other tenant had unpaid rent when he left and that he had caused some damage to his room. My issues are she is now in the process of having me evicted and she is suing me through the small claims court for the outstanding rent and room damage which totals $5500. If the landlady's daughter had not got involved, I would likely have still been OK. The action the daughter is taking is going to cause me all sorts of problems with renting another property and big financial trouble. A friend says I need to realize some realities, he says that I signed a joint lease making either of us liable for paying the full rent so putting me in big renting and financial difficulty should not be any concern at all to her, there is a business to run and evicting and suing me is just what the landlady should have been doing. Is he talking sense?

  • My landlord is trying to do too much remodeling while I live here. What can I do to make him stop or let me out of the lease?

Two weeks ago, I came home and no longer had a kitchen at all. I was given no notice. My stuff (dishes etc) had been moved into the living room and the food in my fridge had been set outside. It wasn't cold enough so most of the food got thrown out. Now he sent me a letter that they are beginning the bathroom remodel tomorrow and I need to make other arrangements as it will take 2 weeks. It is too much. I can't be without a bathroom. At this point, would it be fair to demand he either let me out of the lease or put me up in an extended stay until they are finished? I'm considering taking tomorrow off and turning the contractors away at the door, even calling the police if they refuse to leave. There is nothing wrong with the bathroom that needs fixed. It isn't repairs.

Best answer: So you wrote a check and then proceeded to spend the money...? Buddy, you really need to be more responsible than that.

Anyway, the bank will not cash that check because it is more than six months old, and so the landlord would be dependent on you issuing him a new check. In such a case, I would simply move as planned and decline to do so as the landlord's poor record keeping is not really my problem.

However, to answer your question, you might offer a compromise of 1/2 what is owed. This way you are at least fairly reimbursed for your gas and supplies along with a little extra for your time.

He will say he will help financially to keep house but he doesn't and I don't ask why. If I mention moving to an apartment like he has he will say I can't get house back. Don't I have more power than anyone to sell house if I want and he will have a hard time collecting on any of the house sale proceeds?
