  • How can I make coffee taste better with just whole milk, and sugar?

Best answer: I find that how the coffee is made affects how it interacts with coffee and sugar. I use 2 tablespoons of ground coffee per 6 ounces of water. I add 2 teaspoons of granulated sugar, and just short of 1/4 cup of whole milk. I like the coffee to be pretty strong - if it's weaker, the milk flavor dominates.

  • Is it bad to drink much water?

I drink a lot during a day including all kinds of drinks such as soft drinks, tea, and so on. I’m now wondering if it could be bad for my health. I drink 3-4 liters a day on avarage and was told by my friends I drunk too much.

  • If coffee is left in a cafetière does it begin to taste bad ? How long can it be left for ?

A French press makes really good coffee but if you leave the coffee in there it's still in contact with the grounds, so it will get strong and bitter and acidic in an hour or so.

With a filter cone, the coffee will last longer. I usually put my extra coffee in the refrigerator, and it's just as good heated up the next morning. But I used to work at a movie theater where they just left pots full of coffee, turned off, all night, and rewarmed the coffee in the morning. Nobody could tell.

If you keep coffee hot on a burner, it goes bad very quickly, maybe in an hour. It gets a 'burnt' smell. But you can keep it hot in a vac pot and it will still be good after several hours.

In the refrigerator, brewed coffee should last several days. At room temperature, I wouldn't trust it more than one day.

  • Why does water taste different in different places?

Best answer: It depends on where exactly the local water comes from and what minerals are dissolved in it. This can vary a lot. Absolutely pure distilled water tastes of absolutely nothing, maybe where you come from has relatively soft water so it's almost like that, but now you're somewhere with hard water - that means there is more dissolved in it and that will affect the taste. Or maybe it's the other way round, but if you're saying it tastes nasty, I bet it's because it has more minerals in it that you aren't used to. And the filter isn't good enough to get rid of them.

I live in London, England, that has pretty hard water and I'm used to the taste of it, so if I go almost anywhere else, the water tastes not nasty, just of nothing.

It's certainly noticeable what London water does to electrical appliances, though! I need more washing powder than in a soft water area to create the same amount of soap suds, minerals precipitate out in my kettle and my steam iron, and my coffee machine needs a regular descaling treatment to stop the pipes totally blocking up. Gotta have descaler! - talking of which, there are bits floating around in my kettle and it needs a dose of that. And it's amazing what gunk can come out of my steam iron if I've left it too long to give it the treatment.
