I was rearranging my room looking for something important. I have a desk with shelves under it that contain several different things. Mostly papers etc. As I opened one of them I saw what looked like mouse droppings on one of the folders in the desk shelves. I closed it and opened several of the other shelves looking for the item because I was panicking looking for it. I started feeling a little weird after that. The next day I brought out the first shelve and put it in a trash bag, along with everything in it. As I was sitting on my bed, I noticed an irritating odor. I pulled out the shelve closest to my room floor that I thought the smell came from and realized there were multiple rat droppings all over the floor. My parents told me to sweep it up and throw it away. I did. But ever since then whenever I go into my room I cannot bare the weird odor. It makes me feel sick. Could it be mouse urine or feces?. I did research and learned some mice (deer mice) can carry the hantavirus...only 15 percent though. If this is a normal house mouse can their urine cause sickness or death? I feel really afraid. Anytime I go in my room I feel nauseous and a little dizzy and weird.

Another consideration is how the cage is set up. For example, if there is one ramp to a certain level, that could cause disputes. Best to have two ramps so they won't fight over it. If you don't have an upper level, you may want to make one. A 2 grid by 4 grid cage is not large enough IF it has the bowls and hideys, etc taking up space on that level. The idea with that size is to be sure it is open space large enough for running laps. The addition of an upper level to serve as a "kitchen/litter" area can allow the lower, larger area to serve as romping room.

Here is a sample of a 2 x 4 cage with a kitchen loft. But this one just has one ramp (it was for 2 females). For males, I'd recommend 2 ramps for such a set-up.

  • How to socialize rats?

Anyways, I’ve never owned rats before, but I can tell the way they react to me and my partner isn’t the same as my friends’ pet rats do. I’ve had them for two months now. They hate being touched and are extremely jumpy. I sat in a quiet room with them with their cage open, doing homework for almost three hours and they weren’t even interested in coming out. They keep pushing all of their toys out through the cage bars. Will they ever warm up to me? I’ve had friends that can let theirs run around their rooms and play, but these little girls only climb on their cage walls, eat, and sleep. They don’t even use the wheel they have, the white one just lays on it occasionally.

A vet can determine the problem and turn the animal over to rehabber if treatable or it will be put down.

I am 15 years old, and have a lot of experiance with guinea pigs and mice. Also, I have enough room and money for both options. I was wondering if it would be a good idea for me to breed one of the animals for money. Where would I sell the offspring?

just moved out yesterday, was cleaning outside for old stuff the previous tenant left. pulled on a plastic sheet and a pink baby mice flew over with its mother holding it in his mouth. then i found out there was a mouse nest with 2 other baby mice inside the plastic sheet. my plan was to pick all 3 baby mice and the mother so she could continue raising them. i almost got the mother but she escaped. i was left with 3 baby mice. what i did i put them in their nest and put them in a spot near where the mother escaped. then i came back this morning and only 1 baby mouse was left in the nest - there was no sign of vandalism so i don t think a predator ate them. i believe the mother was around and picked up the 2 of them but forgot the 3rd one. maybe she didn t pick the third one because i tried to feed on of them milk yesterday so the odor maybe repulsed her? anyways, i did leave that one baby mouse all day today in the nest hoping the mother would come back for it. but she didn t and it s been over 24h since that baby ate. how to save it? i tried feeding it milk with a pencil tip as seen on youtube videos but it doesn t want it. i don t want it to die :( please help
