Best answer: Each summer, we drive across the Hudson River to Bard College and its conservatory of music. Winton Marsalis and his ensemble run a TOP level jazz workshop for teens. This is at an incredibly high level. We are both career music educators and professional (classical) musicians. We are big jazz fans as well. And we hold an incredible amount of professional admiration for WM - as we do for Dudamel and others who not only work at a high musical level themselves, but work tirelessly with students. Your question has come up a few times here. I think that a teacher, tv show, or article is jealous. Like some Little League coach who never made the majors, and tells his kids that those who did, are phonies. Yeah, right . . .

Some of the greats such as Mama Cass from the Mamas and the Papas, and Chubby Checker would struggle to get a record contract these days.

Mind you, there still are some great new artists out there such as Adele whose music have a timeless quality.

  • Why is the saxophone so bittersweet?

Whenever I hear a beautiful piece on a sax I want to both cry and yet at the same time feel so happy to hear its sound. I love the guitar, drums, and piano but something about the sax always gets to me.

  • Which jazz singer do you enjoy more: Louis Armstrong or Dean Martin?

Best answer: I think you need to do more research before asking questions like this. The answer is Louis Armstrong because he WAS actually a jazz singer. Dean Martin was not and never was a jazz singer. He was classed as a 'Crooner' in the same way Bing Crosby was and there is no way you can say Crosby was a jazz singer. show more
