• What can I get my 16 year old teenage son for Christmas he likes music a lot but not really interested in certain things?

Best answer: Might be simpler to give him a gift card to itunes or amazon or something. Or just cash. At 16, he's probably beyond the simple materialism. He's also old enough to have a good idea of what he wants and how to get it without having his parents decide everything for. Or just directly ask him:... show more

Or just directly ask him: "anything you want for Christmas?" makes it a lot easier to plan to get.

We ordered a new tree and it arrived today (artificial) and my husband wants it up today and is complaining that I am a Scrooge for saying it’s too soon. I love Christmas but I don’t want the tree up this early. We live in the U.K. so the day after Thanksgiving tradition does not apply. I want it up at the end of November or early December. He wants it now and is sulking. When do we put it up?

11th Hour of the 11th Day of the 11th Month.?

  • I dread the pain and loneliness of Christmas. How do I get my mind off of all the suffering I experience being estranged from family?

Best answer: You are not alone. Wishing for a close “blood” family get together at the holidays is idealistic but not always realistic. Living in a transient area, many here are far from family. A circle of friends can become closer than many families are. Volunteer to help at a soup kitchen or holiday celebration, Find... show more

Volunteer to help at a soup kitchen or holiday celebration, Find friends/others who are away from family and “host” a get together for them. Thinking about how you can help others and keeping busy doing so will lesson your own anxiety during the holidays.

  • I was emotionally abused regularly as a kid at Christmas. Why does the holiday always open the old pain that is closed the rest of the year?

Best answer: Look it's just the big advertising frenzy for Christmas that sets off depression in so many people for all sorts of reasons when life wasn't or isn't so great. We are daily peddled this dreadful annual myth that it's the season of happy family life. Why? It makes us spend MONEY! Almost every Christmas ad shows us someone whose heart's desire has been fulfilled with the perfect gift, that children's eyes are aglow (with greed), and that the table at which an impossible number of family members are gathered, is groaning with the most perfect food. In real life the turkey got burned and everyone argued.
It's a lie, lie, lie. Out there in the real world, people are abused, bereaved, abandoned, have bombs blow them up or get shot.
Try to see Christmas for the sham it is. If you are lonely or upset or it brings up the past, remember it's just one fantasy day out of life. The next day it's all over and we have only the second 'Happy New Year' myth to get through.

I am a big fan of Christmas and Santa. This year when he is delivering our presents, hypothetically, if he flew into Turkish airspace, would he and the reindeers be shot down? I guess maybe I'm being a little paranoid and anxious, but I can't help to worry. Just thought I'd voice a potential concern here so I can have a peace of mind knowing the answer. If that were to really happen, my whole life would be ruined. I live for Santa, he is my idol. And the reindeers of course. And Christmas, and the presents. There is no replacing Santa if he's gone. I'm shuddering at the thought.
