    Best answer: Because people up until recently used to have to have chamber pots to go to the bathroom in. The modern flushable toilets weren't invented until the mid 1800s.     So they the chamber pot. If you were wealthy...it was mounted in a comfy chair that could be removed, dumped and cleaned. If not...it was pretty much a pot on the floor.

    And as to why not to pee on the ground? You couldn't do that in the cities. Especially not during the Victorian era and the Victorian Values of the time.

    So you had to do your business inside...in a pot.

    And if you were incredibly poor...you might not be able to afford a chamber pot. Hence not having a pot to piss in.
