  • I have a sister who is in a coma for a drug overdose. Do they usually come out of coma's? Her drugs were alcohol, heroin, and Xanax?

Best answer: By now the chemical effects of the drugs have probably ceased. There are specific antidotes to heroin and to alprazolam (Xanax). This may mean her breathing slowed down or stopped for a while, long enough to give her brain damage due to hypoxia (low oxygen) but not quite long enough to kill her. Sadly this sort of... show more

Sadly this sort of brain damage is very unpredictable. She may come out of the coma, she may not. If she does, she may have permanent brain damage, or she may recover. If the doctors who are looking after her can't tell you, then we certainly can't.

  • Why is it so bad to ask a doctor for a specific type of medication if you think it will help?

Best answer: You can ask, but you really can't know what is best for you when it comes to medicines. Let the doctor do his job. the asking part isn't terrible, but presuming you know better than the expert is.

Best answer: This is all psychological and not a real physical problem. All too many people complain about swallowing tablets yet frequently swallow much larger boluses of food. You need to do the following:

    1. Tablets are manufactured at a size humans are capable of swallowing - surprisingly enough the pharmaceutical industry has thought about this.

    2. A tablet is not bigger, and quite probably smaller, than a bolus of food you will readily swallow with no thought.

    3. Instead of telling yourself you cannot swallow the pill tell yourself you can.

    4. Have a good drink of water BEFORE you take the tablet to lubricate your throat.

    5. Swallow the pill with plenty of water and do not think about it or focus on it. You never think about swallowing when you are eating a meal you just do it naturally.

What most people do not realise is that unless you take sufficient fluid with a tablet it is not going to get stuck in your throat but it may lodge in your oesophagus. You will not be aware of this and in most cases it will cause no harm unless the contents of the pill are irritants to the oesophagus.

  • C-section question?

I’m having my first baby by c-section and they’re going to cut me vertically, how big is a vertical cesarean incision & how much pain will I be in during the surgery? I hear it’s uncomfortable but I’m terrified I’ll be in a lot of pain while they’re cutting me open.
