Up until the Auschwitz records were released in 1989, it was anyone's guess. The 6 million figure was popular to believe, so people went with it. As noted here, this was only an estimate. And as estimates go, they can be high or low. This 6 million figure turned out to be rather high - more closely following along the lines of the propaganda published by the Jews between 1915 and 1939, which claimed that 6 million Jews were being persecuted and in danger of extermination. This same "6 million" figure also plays prominently in the charges levied against the Germans at the Nuremberg Trials.

In 1989, however, the Soviets released these Auschwitz death records, and it shows a much lower figure of 69,000 as of 1943. Later years are still missing, but there's no speculation that they were destroyed by the Germans - except by those who are obsessed with the "6 million" figure.

According to an answer to a previous question, Himmler was giving orders in 1942 to increase the death rate. According to a US military translation of a German document, He had contacted Berlin with a status report on the number of deaths (from disease) and was pleased because they were dropping.

Most Australians don't even know the difference between a civil and criminal case. Australia was initially built by convicts, you would think they take an interest in law. They don't though. The British coat of arms has the motto "God and my rights". It took thousands of years for the British to establish their rights and the Australians just take them for granted. The Magna Carta was one of the most important documents in European history. It was the first legal document that detailed human rights and the rule of law. It also described how people were fed up of the monarchy and the pope sticking his grubby little hands into British affairs. It was so divisive that it lead to a civil war. Almost every nation in the Commonwealth and the USA emulated the British legal system and Australians piss on it by not knowing how it works.
