I’m a sophomore in high school. In the first semester I was having problems w anxiety and depression So I left and my parents had me start homeschool. I don’t have a car and I don’t work. I pretty much sit at home and do my hw everyday. I get bored out of my mind and I feel like I’m losing my friends. It sounds cheesy yeah but it hurts me more watching them move on and let go I guess. I kind of want to go back to my public school and my parents both say that I basically have no social life anymore. They want me to go back too. My old public is also building a new school right next to my house and it’d open by the end of summer. It’s quite convenient and it would make sense for me to go back after finishing this semester of homeschool. But I want to be a vet. And I was talking to my teacher about it and she said I could up my classes by making them more advanced. There’s also a vet class I can take and more options of math and sciences I can do that could give me more knowledge abt my career choice. And she said I could get into a university if I take more advanced classes. I’ve read a bunch online that homeschooled kids can’t get into universities but my teachers telling me another thing. So my perspective on homeschool changed. I wouldn’t have the opportunity of taking better classes at a public school tho. So... Part of me wants to stay in homeschool because of this new opportunity and the other part wants to go to the new school that’ll be opening up. Idk what to do...

She wants to do school because she wants to be a normal kid and have a stable future but her guardian doesn’t seem to care. She always breaks promises and says she’ll enroll her in school but just doesn’t. This is obviously neglect (she neglects her in other ways too but I won’t get into that) but is this abuse? I’ve asked many people but I’ve gotten mixed responses.

  • Why do adults believe that the school system has not changed over the years?

For example, adults often say that school now does not have a more difficult curriculum as it did in the late 80's or 90's. Its been over 20 years, hasn't it gotten more difficult?

Best answer: Parents change their minds when they see proof that alternate points of view are valid. They do NOT change their minds as a result of arguing, complaining, or debating. Step one is to have an adult conversation with ONE parent, not both, asking what you can do to show that you are ready for a job. Agree with that one parent about the conditions of the activity and the length of time it will take to "open up the discussion." Let that parent approach the other one at the right time. In the meantime, take the conditions seriously, and meet them. Keep your mind open. If you find that you cannot live up to the agreement, consider the possibility that your parents were right, and you need more time to prepare yourself. If, on the other hand, everything falls into place, you can handle the questions of your age and legal restrictions when those considerations matter.
