You're wrong olkaycar, it was a result of the regency French 'parlement' where opposing aristocrats sat on the left and right of the king.
Left-wingers proper are Socialists and at the extreme Communists. The idea is to solve problems and provide services collectively. Supposedly with the general populace effectively governing itself. This rarely occurs though, parties have tended to become governing elites.
Modern Right-wing parties are sticklers for tradition, an almost obsession with the idea of 'frontier-like' individuals providing all their own needs without need of any government. And since the late 19th century, also advocates of "free trade" (originally a Liberal concept).
These basic caricatures are not set in stone. Each type of government has various of these elements at different times. The Bush administration, for example, hates the idea of social medical provision, but is happy to boast about how many billions it pours into 'Medicare/caid'.
Like the guy above wrote, you need to read up on this in detail to avoid getting opinion and caricatures.
Generally from idiots like Horus above. The amount of people spending 'your tax money' Horus are children, old people and the disabled, the famous stereotypical scrounger is a small piece of a pie chart, but you don't want to acknowledge this, because it helps vent your anger over being legitimately taxed.
