The human unfertilized egg cell contains 46 chromosome before fertilization by a haploid sperm cell.
("As is the case in most mammals, the secondary oocyte is triggered to undergo and complete division II of meiosis "only" if it is fertilized by a sperm."
"These induced primary oocytes complete meiotic division 1 to form a small (first) polar body and a large secondary oocyte; this secondary oocyte subsequently undergoes meiotic division 2 to form a second small polar body and a large mature ovum. ....")
Activation (fertilization) by the sperm cell triggers the completion of the meiotic division 2 where the then diploid ovum nuclei forms the second haploid polar body which is lost at the surface of the egg cell. Only then is the egg ready for its haploid genome to fuse with that of the sperm DNA.

none of these people answered right :( sperm and egg have 23---because if you pair an egg and a sperm to make an offspring you get 46 which is the right number. daughter cell from MITOSIS has 46 -- that's a body cell daughter cell from MEIOSIS II has 23 -- that's a sperm or egg
