Has Groundhog Day become entirely too commercialized? Who still celebrates the spiritual meaning behind it?

I cannot help but be dismayed when the stores already and filled with nothing but items for Groundhog Day; what happened to the message behind it?

Update:

Errata: The above should read "..the stores already *are* filled...."; my apologies.

I hear the atheists are trying to take "hog" out of the day so it is just "Ground Day"

I heard that they are trying to take the Ground out of it and make it Hog day. That way the stores can sell more food. The theme will be hog out on Hog day.

I hear ya, but must confess. I bought one of those Jack in the boxes..with the pop up ground hog.....it is so cute!

It confuses people though cause it plays "pop goes the weasel" but it is in fact a groundhog.

Honestly, I've forgotten the deeper spiritual meaning.

Does it have something to do with Jesus coming out of a cave after three days and seeing his shadow?

I agree. This nation was founded on Groundhog principles, and removing those principles just to avoid offending immigrants, liberals, homosexuals and other malcontents is a disgrace!

Seriously, they're just trying to attack our Groundhog roots, those pesky progressive secular liberals that is. Everyone knows it was the birth of the Groundhog why we celebrate it.

In Wicca, we celebrate it as "Imbolc". And, yes, our stores are often stocked accordingly. We try to hang onto the meaning, but even we get lost sometimes.

Jack, I have the exact same question regarding Arbor Day! Man, am I SICK and TIRED of all the hype that surrounds *that* holiday!

So many people refer to it as G-hog Day now. It's so sad.
