My dad wasn't around much (especially during those formative years) so like you I had to figure a lot of that stuff out on my own too.
For shaving it is a personal choice. I say do it. I say any man who doesn't is probably doing himself a disservice.
Yes, it grows backs fuller. And so what? So does your beard, but that doesn't mean you don't shave the hair on your face.
Think of it this way, How women view men with unkempt hair on their heads (I am talking actually head not the one down there)? Talk to women and they will tell you, they look at these men poorly, very very poorly actually, a man who would normally be successful with women will probably be less successful if his hair is messy and unkempt.
The same with facial hair, having facial is fine, but it must look clean and groomed if you want women to like it.
So if women feel this way about hair on your head and your face, how do you think they will feel about the hair around your c*ck?
Does having it unshaven mean she won't give head or won't sleep with you? No. But why risk it. With all the time and energy we spend trying to get with women, why then leave something on the table that is possibly a deal breaker.
For a first timer I would say do not shave it all off. But you should get in the habit of trimming it. Shaving it bald can be both hard to do and uncomfortable as it grows back in, try to keep a centimeter or two of hair but most of the hair is just germ catchers.
If the hair is shorter it looks cleaner and if the area around your c*ck looks cleaner girls are going to be less resistant and open to more stuff with you when you whip it out.
ADDITIONAL: To trim, use what ever you are comfortable with it. To start I would say small (but easy to hold) scissors.
although you are doing this to groom, it does not have to be perfect. I say small scissors mainly because they are easy to control, this is not a time to be Mr. Hey let me prove how great I am at holding things complex and sharp things.
The first time you try cutting hair around that area you realize, the male body was not really designed all that great for easy access (at leas not for the guy in the body), so do what is comfortable.
Do not try to cut it all off the first time, just trim down what you feel okay with.
What I find works best for first time trim is cutting it just like the Barber does. Put a little bit of the hair between your fingers and then cut the hair at the top off.
Cutting the hair around your the inside of your legs and your balls is a lot harder. See how close you can get while still feeling comfortable, if you feel uncomfortable abort, try again some other time, far better to have a little hair than a huge scar.
With time you might be comfortable with an electric razor or shaver, they can give you a much closer shave but you HAVE to know what you are doing if you use those because well they will hurt a lot if you use them wrong.
But also don't be too afraid to experiment. The hair above you c8ck (closer to you stomach) is a good place to see what you are okay with, with out to much risk. You should probably trim MORE there than the rest cuz it is easier and as you get better you will trim more as you go down towards your c*ck.
Good luck, be safe.
