Can a house be built off the ground, like a wooden house?

As in, so there is space underneath a brick house. How? haha

Of course. If you are anywhere near New Orleans, drop by, most homes now are built raised, wood, brick, concrete etc. Some homes where raised after the storm, some built after wards and most out of block, brick or concrete to take the wind from tropical storms.

Is it cheap. Depends on your outlook. The cost of replacing all your items plus the loss of pictures and keepsakes make it a bargain.

You can do most anything if you're willing to pay the extra cost. Lots of old wooden houses are supported by columns underneath them. You could do a brick house as well, it would just need a massive support structure.

It seems unlikely that a raised structure (required in many coastal towns/cities) can be made of brick or concrete/cinder block. The weight would be prohibitive, I think. One can certainly overlay the exterior with one of the many "fake" brick materials.
