The Acai berry (pronounced ah-sigh-e) has been turned into a juice and used for thousands of years in Amazon basin in South America for all sorts of medicinal purposes. Many tribes in the Amazon forest have used Acai berries that are grown in the mineral rich soil of the Amazon rain forest for boosting immune and sexual function, fighting infection, and for providing energy. In fact, the Brazilians call Acai the Viagra of the Amazon. The Acai berry is a type of palm fruit, and is known to be rich in antioxidants, minerals, B vitamins, vitamin E, essential omega 3, 6 and 9 fatty acids and more. It contains many times higher levels of anthocyanins (powerful antioxidants) than those found in red wine. It also has large amounts of naturally occurring plant sterols, which help boost immune function and have been shown to help all sorts of conditions, including allergies, joint inflammation and chronic fatigue.

Because of all this, the Acai berry and Acai juice is becoming more and more well known in the USA and also in Europe. Perhaps starting with the NBC Today show in 2004 and continuing with Oprah Winfrey Show segments, Acai has become the darling of the health world. In fact, Oprah said: Whatever your favorite berries are (blueberries, cranberries, etc.), Acai 'out-antioxidizes' them all, hands down! She called Acai the number 1 superfood. But is Acai really all it's cracked up to be?
