What is the donut hole?

I hear medicare patients talking about the "donut hole" and I need to know briefly what it is and how to figure when it occurs in my coverage. Thanks!

It's a demographic of older people who fall into a void where medical insurance coverage and assistance is needed but they are not capable of obtaining it, or they do not qualify because of their age.
