What is the difference between cultured buttermilk and greek yogurt or sour cream?

I'm trying to start my own cultured buttermilk but am wondering if I even bother if I can buy greek yogurt or sour cream and still have the same effect...

When I lived in a country where I couldn't get buttermilk, I would make a really good substitute by mixing yogurt with milk. I would just put about a cup of yogurt in a jar, then maybe 1/2 cup milk in the jar and shake. You can adjust the milk to get the consistency you want. Worked perfect, but you might want to make extra--it is delicious!

Yogurt has live bacteria (good kind) and sour cream does not.
