Why is the counter-current exchange system important for fish gills?

It increases the amount of oxygen that diffuses into the blood. With countercurrent exchange, the amount of diffusion is greater than 50%.

A! :) in the respiratory system of fish, as high O2 concentration water passes against the blood at a lower concentration the oxygen is passed from the water to the blood. therefore oxygen transfer, even if answer c is true..
