Why do Conservatives keep trying to blame Liberals for slavery?

Every Conservative Web Site tries to claim that Liberals were behind Jim Crow Laws and Slavery.

100 YEARS AGO DEMOCRATS WERE CONSERVATIVE STATES RIGHTS.

1800's Southern Democrats were Conservative States Rights and 1800's republicans were Northern Yankee Liberals Abraham Lincoln was a Yankee Liberal Republican most Southern White Voters switched over to Republican after Richard Nixon's Southern Strategy after the 1960's.Thats why today 90% of Southern White VOTERS are republican.

1.Republicans have NOT always been Conservatives.

2.Democrats have NOT always been Liberals.

I don't blame liberals for slavery,I blame the tribal leaders for slavery.

This really isn't about what party is to blame,But more as to what race is to blame.

It's like the old argument of what Jesus was (socialist, liberal, conservative, etc.). It's a nonsense argument. The total number of issues each holds a position on simply doesn't translate.

Goodness, it's hard enough trying to compare a liberal here vs. one in Europe. They just aren't the same thing.

HOWEVER, it would be wonderful if my party (Democratic) actually sought to get people OFF of welfare in an active way, to empower them with skills and knowledge (they do, but they seem a bit blind to the problems of dependence on government).

That seems to be the only hold-over in the party from it's slavery days.

And now it is sliding into socialism, the ultimate slavery (everyone works for the state).

No, thank you. When my party turns back to free speech, freedom of expression, freedom of religion, freedom of the press, and equality FIRST, and drops the socialist nonsense, then we can truly say we have cut off our slave-holder roots.

I do find the attempts by conservatives a bit silly.

Just as silly as ours to paint them as racists.

Political bigotry is just plain silly.

Everyone knows that "liberal" and "conservative" are not defined ideologies, but rather terms applied to contemporary change vs. status quo. That's why the ideology of the Classical Liberal Founders became the Conservative ideology of Today. In another 100 years, people who share Ralph Nader's views would be considered crusty old conservatives who are afraid of change. People fight for change as liberals when they're young, get what they want, then try to keep it that way. They don't "become more conservative," but rather the youth become more liberal. Everyone knows this, but they pretend they don't in order to score cheap political points. Just because the Monarchist Loyalists were the conservatives of the Revolutionary War doesn't mean that Tim Pawlenty is a British Monarchist.

EDIT: I see that no one here knows the difference between the word Democrat and the word Liberal. You know all those Civil Rights activists and anti-war hippies in the '60's were TOTALLY Republican Conservatives, right? And those McCarthyists holding signs attacking interracial marriage as "communism," yeah, those were liberals, right? Jeez, this is dumb.

  • Republicans in Lincoln's day were trying to preserve (conserve) the Union. At the time Democrats were in favor of keeping slavery in the southern states. Two not perfectly related things but may answer part of your question.

Slaver existed long before America. It existed literally everywhere in the world at the time. America help abolish it. So neither liberals nor conservatives were responsible for slavery.

As for the deffinition of Conservative and Liberal, you're right. Republicans have always held to the same set of ideals. The ideals that put them at odds with Democrat Slave holders. Republicans still hold to those ideals as do Democrats.

Democrats clearly see Minorities as inferior if you look at their policies, just now they see them as inferiors that need to be protected rather than subjugated. Republicans just see them as people.

In actuality "liberal" and "conservative" werent established ideologies until after slavery was abolished so both shall not be blamed for past ideologues of the same.

Actually both the south and north were selective about rights for the states. The south didn't want the north ignoring the fugitive slave act and the north didn't think the south had the right to secede.

Modern Republican are trying to blame Democrats for everything these. I don't even think that the terminology of conservative and liberal was even being used in the 1800s. And there are also conservation democrats and liberal republican (although that one might be an oxymoron).

Just look at all the traditional red states, and it's basically a map of the old Confederacy.

Wrong. The Republican party was created to end slavery. If anyone doesn't know history, it's Liberals like you. I know, it's not your fault. Our education system isn't very good any more.
