Did you know that Mel Gibson has never been an Australian citizen?

The Australian press still persist in referring to Mel Gibson as an Aussie. He lived here with his family during his teens and early twenties. However, he didn't apply for Aussie citizenship. How do you feel about the Australian press persisting in calling him an Australian when he has never been one?

He came to Australia when he was 12 years old with his family. He had a residency visa while living in Australia. I hope that this information help to confirm that Mel has never been more than a resident of Australia even if he did do his formative acting training here at NIDA.
Update 2: Teandbikkies, I'm aware that doing research is time consuming. I have done some years of it. Don't be devastated by the fact that it took so long to find out about Mel and the OA. He is certainly a talented actor. However, he didn't ever get naturalised. From what I can gather nor did Olivia Newton - John or the Bee Gees (Gibb Brothers). They all hold join British - US citizenship. Born in the United Kingdom and obtained US citizenship to live and work there.
