Good and bad things about gambling?

I'm doing a debate and my team is arguing that we should ban gambling so what are somethings I can rebut against the other team? Like, what is a good thing (the opposite of mine) about gambling and how can I respond to it?

You could ask yourself why does gambling exist. Why would an individual take a risk that is almost certain to be a loss with only a slight potential for a big win? Well, it's because we've evolved to do so. It isn't rational as an individual to take such risks but if a large number of people took such a risk then some of them would benefit. That is a lottery does make a millionaire, it just won't be you. To evolution, that's exactly what evolution wants, for some individuals to build up the resources to withstand any possible circumstances, it doesn't matter to evolution if you individually fail so long as someone in the population succeeds hence there is an evolutionary advantage to gambling and there is a tendency for people to gamble on very small probabilities with very high gains, a lot more people play the lottery than Roulette but you're far better off with Roulette than the lottery.

Well for starters I was raised that it is wrong to get money without earning it as sometimes happens in gambling. Another thing is many games or whatever that are for gambling have the odds stacked extremely high against you. So you often lose a lot of money that could be used for other things that your family needs or put in a bank and let it gain interest. Also gambling can often times become an addiction and we have all heard the stories where people lose everything (though sometimes people win big). I could go on some more but those are just some main points.

Gambling is a form of entertainment & a recreational activity. Like many other recreational activities, there are costs involved. When you gamble, the odds are against you, and on average, people lose money. Similarly, people spend money going to the movies, or to a nightclub, or to a ballpark to watch a game, or bowling, and so on.

If you would condone a person going to a professional football game and spending $100 ($50 for a ticket, $10 for parking, $40 for food and beverages) then why would you suggest that it's a problem for the same person to go to a casino and lose $100 playing blackjack or slot machines? Furthermore, it is assured that the individual will spend the $100 at the game, but there is a possibility that he or she might win at the casino.

Any responsible adult is capable of making decisions of how to spend their time and money. Yes, some people have an unhealthy urge to gamble, and some people are addicted. Some people even gamble away their home, car, and all other possessions. But then, people get addicted to cigarettes and develop heart and lung diseases. Should we ban cigarettes? Other people drive irresponsibly and kill or injure themselve and others as a result of reckless driving. Should we ban cars?

People get an unhealthy fixation on spending money frivolously on things like clothing and jewelry. Should we ban credit cards and shopping malls?

Casinos employ millions (yes millions) of people. The Foxwoods Casino in Connecticut has over 10,000 employees, and that's just one casino.

    So those are some positives.

You have the easy side of this argument due to the odds alone with gambling. Gambling is set up solely for the person playing have the most odds of losing their money. A good thing about gambling is that it is a source of entertainment for some like going to the movies..etc. Response to this would be something around gambling in moderation isn't harmful but can lead to more and more money willing to gamble and most likely lose.

    Why Is Gambling Good

You should read my question, "do you think everyone should play gambling games?" I meant it as a joke but I guess you could use it as an actual pro-gambling debate. I would honestly say that gambling isn't' bad, your attitude towards gambling is either good or bad. For example, gambling is supposed to be fun. If you are playing a game like chess, then it may also be to make a profit and be the better player. But the bottom-line, I think, should always be about fun. It helps you to control your emotions a lot more if you think like this because if you lose you are able to justify it as still a fun time. If you are just thinking about the profits then, I think, it is a lot easier to slip into things like chasing your losses when you lose.

Horse racing can provide opportunities that other forms of gambling cannot. In fact at the site below there are some free articles on %'s and why this is one of the best forms of gambling and where you can actually win.

If we judge it directly the certainly it is a bad thing cause it becomes addict to play with money and people loses money hoping to earn more. But there are tricks which we can use while playing, if one has ability to use the tricks than one can win the game so it could be the good thing.
